Six downtown Alpharetta streets will close the evening of Sept. 17 for the Mayor's Corporate Challenge 5K.
Rolling closures will affect Park Plaza, Commerce Street, Haynes Bridge Road, Academy Street, Westside Parkway and Thompson Street from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m., according to the City of Alpharetta. Drivers who use those routes during the evening commute should plan alternate paths.
The event starts well before the race. A vendor expo with food trucks, games, bouncy houses, live music and a Truck and Tap opens at 4 p.m. at Alpharetta City Hall. A kids fun run follows at 6 p.m., and the 5K begins at 6:30 p.m., according to Patch.
Registration for the 5K costs $40 through RunSignUp.
Who benefits
The race is the Rotary Club of Alpharetta's primary fundraiser. Since 2014, the Mayor's Corporate Challenge has raised more than $700,000 for over 100 charities and causes, according to the event's official website. Recipients include North Fulton Community Charities, Drake House, Homestretch, Foster Care Georgia and the YMCA. The club also directs funds toward global efforts in polio eradication, literacy and clean water.
One charity representative featured on the event website said the fundraiser helped provide more than 37,000 meals to children and families in need during a recent year.
The Rotary Club of Alpharetta, chartered in 1982, has more than 150 members.
Where to park
The city designated four parking areas for the event:
- City Hall Parking Deck, 2 Park Plaza
- Old Roswell Street Lot, 27 Old Roswell St.
- Milton Avenue Parking Deck, 92 Milton Ave.
- Roswell Street Lot, 45 Roswell St.
Residents who live or work along the closure route should expect delays between 5:15 and 8:15 p.m. and consider arriving before the closures begin.
