Northbound drivers on SR 400 in Alpharetta will lose a peak-hour travel lane near Windward Parkway beginning Sunday, Dec. 13, as construction continues on the highway’s express lanes project.
The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to permanently close the flexible shoulder lane from just south of the Webb Bridge Road overpass to Exit 11 at Windward Parkway, weather permitting. The change covers approximately three-quarters of a mile, according to a City of Alpharetta announcement reported by Patch.
The flex lane currently provides additional northbound capacity during peak traffic periods. Once it closes, crews will remove its signs and striping and install a temporary concrete barrier.
Four northbound lanes will remain open under the new traffic pattern. Drivers heading to Windward Parkway will continue to reach the two-lane exit ramp from the right lanes.
The closure announcement does not provide an estimate of additional commute times.
The work is part of the SR 400 Express Lanes Project, which will add express lanes along approximately 16 miles between the North Springs MARTA station in Fulton County and a point about one mile north of McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County.
Construction is underway at multiple locations along the corridor, with work occurring during the day and overnight. GDOT expects planned construction to be completed by 2031, although the schedule is subject to change, according to the official project website.
Drivers can find construction updates and traffic alerts on the project website. Questions can be directed to the project hotline at 770-209-2520 or [email protected].
