Steve Maddalena birdied the final hole to win the Golfweek Super Senior National Championship by one shot at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course in Alpharetta, capping a three-day tournament that wrapped up on July 9.

Maddalena, 66, of Jackson, Michigan, posted rounds of 69-71-73 to finish at 3-under par, edging Stevie Cannady of Pooler, Georgia, by a single stroke. Keith Holmes of Macon, Georgia, finished third at 3-over.

The Michigan Golf Hall of Famer went 31 holes before making his first bogey of the week and had only one three-putt across 54 holes, according to Golfweek. He credited a video a friend took of his putting stroke, which revealed a flaw he was able to correct before the tournament.

"We got to the last hole and I had a one-shot lead, and Steve hit it in there pretty tight to about 10 feet," Maddalena told Golfweek. "Then I hit a little pitching wedge to about 12, 15 feet and I putted it first and made it, fortunately, because I knew he was going to make his putt the way he was playing."

Maddalena held a four-shot cushion after 36 holes but saw it shrink on the back nine Thursday as Cannady, the 2024 champion, charged. The birdie on the par-5 18th hole sealed it.

A three-time Michigan Amateur Champion and former University of Michigan golfer, Maddalena said the win validated months of work since his last national title at the Society of Seniors National Super Senior in fall 2025.

Other division winners

Emile Vaughan of Fairhope, Alabama, won the Legend division at 2-under, three shots clear of Bob Edens of Columbia, South Carolina.

Neil Spitalny of Chattanooga, Tennessee, took the Super Legend title at 2-under. His second-round 4-under 68 on Wednesday, July 8, was the lowest round of the entire tournament.

Todd Doss of Mandeville, Louisiana, won the limited-field Senior Division Invitational at 6-under, avenging a playoff loss in the same event a year ago.

Alpharetta's course on the national stage

The Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course regularly hosts elite amateur competition. The venue stages the Georgia Cup each April, a match between the reigning U.S. Amateur and British Amateur champions held before the Masters Tournament, and Georgia Tech's Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational each fall.

The Super Senior division is open to players 65 and older, with the Legend and Super Legend divisions representing older age brackets. Allen Peake of Macon, the top-ranked senior amateur in the field entering the week, finished tied for 25th after an opening-round 79.

Maddalena said he plans to return to Michigan to play a local senior county open with his 88-year-old father, Roger, before competing in a U.S. Senior Amateur qualifier later in July.
