Alpharetta jail staff found methamphetamine hidden in a 35-year-old Norcross man's sock during booking on Aug. 14, leading to drug and contraband charges, Appen Media reported.

Alpharetta police told Appen Media that officers stopped the man's vehicle on Georgia 120 after observing multiple traffic infractions. Officers said they had noticed the vehicle parked behind an Old Milton Parkway hotel that police described as a location where drug transactions are common.

During the traffic stop, officers suspected the driver was intoxicated. Both the Norcross man and a 38-year-old passenger from Atlanta showed bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, tremors and skin sores, according to the report.

Officers spotted crumpled aluminum foil with burn marks on the passenger floorboard.

A search of the vehicle turned up a glass water pipe, a blowtorch-style lighter, a digital scale and two plastic baggies containing substances. One was white and crystalline. The other was purple and powdery.

Officers arrested the Atlanta passenger on a methamphetamine possession charge. The Norcross driver was arrested on an active warrant for loitering and prowling.

Contraband discovered at detention center

At the Alpharetta Detention Center, staff found foil and two baggies of methamphetamine concealed in the Norcross man's sock, police said. He was then charged with possession of methamphetamine, crossing a guard line with prohibited items and improper lane change.

Crossing a guard line with drugs can carry felony penalties under Georgia law, though the specific statute applicable to the city-run Alpharetta Detention Center has not been confirmed by the department.
