Alpharetta residents can get rid of old paint, gasoline and household chemicals for free at a one-day hazardous waste collection event on Nov. 7.

The city is accepting items at Alpharetta Public Works, 1790 Hembree Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the city's event listing. Pre-registration is required, and the deadline to sign up is Nov. 4.

Only residents who live within Alpharetta city limits may participate. Businesses are not eligible, and the number of spots is limited.

Accepted items include paint and paint-related substances, old gasoline, home and garden chemicals, poisons and 16-ounce propane cylinders. No larger propane tanks will be accepted.

New for this collection: household fire extinguishers have been added to the accepted list, with a limit of 15.

Registered residents will be told to stay in their vehicles at the collection site while technicians unload the materials. There is no charge for accepted items. A full list of accepted materials is available on the registration form.

Terry Porter of the Alpharetta Public Works Department is the event contact and can be reached at [email protected] or 678-297-6213.

Alpharetta Public Works also maintains a permanent glass recycling drop-off at the same 1790 Hembree Road location. Only clean glass beverage and food containers are accepted there.
