Crews are clearing trees, grading land, and relocating utilities along SR 400 through Alpharetta as the Express Lanes project enters its active construction phase in the city's corridor, the City of Alpharetta confirmed Thursday, July 23.
Drivers on SR 400 should expect more visible construction equipment, temporary concrete barriers, changing traffic patterns, and overnight lane closures in the weeks and months ahead, according to the city's July 23 advisory.
The 16-mile project, estimated at approximately $11 billion according to the Georgia Department of Transportation, stretches from the North Springs MARTA Station to just north of McFarland Parkway. The corridor has been divided into segments, with work advancing at different stages along the route. Alpharetta's segments have entered active construction.
What drivers should watch for
The city listed several conditions commuters will encounter:
- Overnight lane closures on SR 400
- Traffic shifts as work moves from one segment to another
- Reduced shoulder space in active work zones
- Construction vehicles entering and leaving the highway
- Slower traffic during overnight work and the morning commute following lane closures
Most lane closures are scheduled overnight, typically between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., to reduce daytime disruption, according to GDOT's project FAQ. No construction work will take place on holidays.
Project scope
When complete, the project will add two express lanes in each direction between North Springs MARTA Station and McGinnis Ferry Road, and one express lane in each direction from McGinnis Ferry Road to McFarland Parkway. GDOT's traffic analysis projects travel times up to 30 percent shorter than general-purpose lanes during peak hours.
The project also creates space for future MARTA Bus Rapid Transit service, with stations planned at Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, and Windward Parkway Park & Ride in Alpharetta.
GDOT's project timeline sets completion for 2031. The project broke ground on April 22 with nearly 300 business and community stakeholders in attendance.
