Milton residents have three ways to engage with their city government in August, starting with a Citizens Police Academy that kicks off Thursday evening.
The Milton Police Department's fall academy begins Aug. 13 and runs six consecutive Thursday evenings through Sept. 17, generally from 6 to 8 p.m., at Milton Municipal Court inside the Public Safety Complex at 13690 Highway 9. The course covers investigations, crime analysis, special operations and police command responsibilities. Demonstrations may include SWAT operations and a use-of-force simulator.
The program is not a walk-in. Registration and a background check are required, according to the Milton Police Department's program page. Forms can be dropped off at Police Headquarters during weekday business hours or emailed to community outreach officer Rebecca Tidwell at [email protected].
4,000 households tapped for community survey
The city has mailed National Community Survey invitations to 4,000 randomly selected Milton households, as first reported by the North Atlanta Star. Each postcard contains a household-specific link so results can be weighted by geography and demographics. The survey, administered by the platform Polco, covers police services, parks, quality of life, sidewalks, trails and economic development.
The City of Milton said on X on July 27 that the feedback "helps shape future City decisions and provides statistically valid insights into our community." Responses are due Sept. 16.
Residents who did not receive a postcard will be able to complete a separate open survey near the end of August, though those results will not carry the same statistical weight.
Legacy Park closed through August
Legacy Park at 170 Cox Road, near Arnold Mill Road, is closed through the end of August while the city rebuilds the 8-acre complex's supporting infrastructure. The project is roughly doubling available parking, paving the lot and adding lighting, stormwater improvements, septic work and a seating wall.
The city purchased Legacy Park in January 2020 and turfed its two full-sized multi-sport fields in 2022. Residents who attended a prior city open house on the improvements expressed enthusiasm for the expanded parking and paved lot, according to city records.
