On Thursday, July 16, visitors showed up for mini-golf, cake and a birthday party marking the Crabapple branch's 11th year of service.
The library at 855 Mayfield Road, a branch of the Fulton County Library System, opened on July 16, 2015, as Milton's first public library. It was the fifth branch built under a 2008 bond referendum in which Fulton County voters approved funding for eight new libraries across the county.
The 25,000-square-foot building draws its look from Milton's equestrian and agrarian roots. Sloped, gabled roofs and clerestory windows frame a silo-shaped lobby, and floor-to-ceiling glass offers views of the community green and a historic oak tree outside.
Eleven years in, the branch has become a gathering spot that fills up fast. Library staff told Appen Media that the "Learn How to Play Mahjong" program is one of the most popular offerings, with sessions routinely at capacity. Summer traffic spikes as residents seek free air-conditioned space, and staff said patrons are increasingly using online resources for e-books and magazines.
Carolina Hodzic, a Milton resident who attended a programming event at the library before stopping by the birthday celebration, told Appen Media she visits often and is particularly fond of the bilingual classes.
Staff say the library has become a landmark in one of the oldest parts of Fulton County, offering a place for residents to listen, learn and connect.
