Milton residents have until Saturday, Sept. 26, to drop off old batteries, aerosol cans, automotive fluids and other hazardous materials at the city's free annual collection event.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection runs from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 26, in the Cambridge High School parking lot, according to the city's announcement. Registration is required and available on a first-come, first-served basis at miltonga.gov/HHWCollection.

Registration opened Sept. 14. The city warned that spots have filled up quickly in past years.

Spots are limited.

Accepted items include aerosol spray cans, automotive liquids such as transmission fluid, brake fluid and motor oil, household and automotive batteries, propane and helium cylinders, fire extinguishers, and flammable liquids like gasoline, kerosene and lighter fluid.

Most paints are not accepted at the free city collection. Cambridge High School's theatre program will run its own paint recycling fundraiser in the same parking lot at the same time. The theatre group charges fees based on the type and amount of paint, and no advance registration is needed for the paint drop-off.

MXI Environmental Services, the city's contracted partner, will handle collection, transport and disposal of the gathered materials. The Milton City Council approved a professional services agreement with MXI for the city's hazardous waste collection events, according to city records.

Milton's Sustainability Advisory Committee received a staff update on the collection at its Sept. 8 meeting, part of the city's broader sustainability planning efforts.

The collection is open only to Milton residents. Registration is first-come, first-served and closes when all spots are filled. The event begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 26 at Cambridge High School.
