Democrat Tanya Miller won the Georgia attorney general race, a statewide contest on Georgia ballots. Miller received 2,316,898 votes, or 55.5%, to Republican Brian Strickland’s 1,855,529 votes, or 44.5%, with all 159 counties reporting, according to unofficial results from the Georgia Secretary of State updated at 4:19 a.m. EST on Nov. 4. The Associated Press called the race Tuesday night, WABE reported.

Miller led by 461,369 votes, a margin of about 11.1 percentage points. The results reflect 4,172,427 votes counted. NBC News results, using data provided by the Associated Press, showed the same rounded percentages.

Miller will become Georgia’s first Black woman attorney general when she takes office in January, according to WABE.

What was at stake

Georgia’s attorney general enforces state laws, represents state agencies in lawsuits and safeguards consumers. The office also issues legal opinions binding on state agencies and departments, according to its description of duties. The key issues:

  • Both candidates promised to target gangs, human traffickers, scammers and organized crime, according to WABE.
  • The candidates clashed over automated license plate readers and state open records laws. Outgoing Republican Attorney General Chris Carr’s office pulled back on enforcing open records laws before leaving, WABE reported.
  • Miller highlighted her experience as a former homicide and sex crimes prosecutor. Strickland pointed to his private litigation experience in property rights and elder abuse, according to WABE.

A little history

Miller, a state representative who served as chair of the House Minority Caucus, is the founder and lead attorney at Miller Injury Trial Law. She earned her law degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1999. Strickland, a state senator from McDonough, previously served as a state representative for District 111 from 2013 to 2017.

Incumbent Republican Attorney General Chris Carr did not seek reelection, instead running for governor, according to WABE. Strickland earned endorsements from President Donald Trump, Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp, WABE reported.

In fundraising reported by the Georgia Recorder in August, Miller raised over $446,000 during the most recent quarter while Strickland raised nearly $324,000. Strickland maintained a cash-on-hand edge at the time, ending the quarter with $448,000 compared with Miller’s $329,000.

NBC News data showed the partisan margin in the attorney general race shifted 13.25 percentage points toward Democrats compared with Georgia’s 2024 presidential result.

What’s next

The results remain unofficial pending completion of the canvass and certification. Miller’s swearing-in is slated for January, according to WABE.
