Innovation Academy in Alpharetta placed third in the state and 112th nationally in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools rankings, released Tuesday, Aug. 18.
The STEM-focused magnet school on Milton Avenue, which graduated its first class in the 2023-2024 school year, landed behind only Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Lawrenceville (No. 7 nationally, No. 1 in Georgia) and Columbus High School (No. 70 nationally, No. 2 in Georgia).
Three other north Fulton high schools were also cited in the draft as appearing in the state rankings: Milton High School at No. 28, Alpharetta High School at No. 32 and Cambridge High School at No. 41. Those three figures could not be independently confirmed for this story — the U.S. News district page returned an access error during fact-checking — though nothing found contradicts them.
What drove the ranking
U.S. News evaluated roughly 27,000 public high schools nationwide and ranked nearly 18,000 of them. The methodology weighs six measures: student achievement on state assessments, graduation rates, college readiness, how well schools serve underserved students, curriculum breadth and overall student outcomes. "College readiness" is itself calculated from student participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams, according to U.S. News. Data came from the 2023-2024 school year, produced in partnership with research firm RTI International.
Innovation Academy's own school profile documents, published by Fulton County Schools, show roughly 71% of students took at least one AP course in the most recent published data (996 of 1,402 students sat for 2,397 AP exams), with an 85%-90% pass rate. That figure is well short of the 98% Advanced Placement participation rate the draft attributed to the school; attempts to verify that number directly on Innovation Academy's U.S. News profile page returned an access error, and the 98% figure could not be confirmed anywhere for Innovation Academy specifically. The school's most recent graduating class on record, the Class of 2025, numbered 418 students. The percentage of Innovation Academy students who are economically disadvantaged could not be independently confirmed.
Enrollment and admissions
The school opened in 2021 on the former Milton High School campus at 125 Milton Ave. Fulton County Schools' most recently published enrollment figures put the school at roughly 1,450 to 1,500 students in grades 9 through 12; the specific "about 1,433" figure could not be independently confirmed. Innovation Academy offers three career pathways: Healthcare, IT and Engineering.
Demand is high. Innovation Academy draws from a wide swath of north Fulton County, with students zoned for Alpharetta, Cambridge, Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek, Milton, North Springs, Northview, Riverwood and Roswell high schools all eligible to apply. Admission is by lottery for rising ninth graders only. The school's website describes a waitlist process with multiple rounds of acceptance offers in January, but a specific count of 17 students remaining on a 2026-27 waitlist could not be independently confirmed there.
LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News, said in the Aug. 18 announcement that the rankings are designed to give families consistent data when comparing schools across the state.
The application window for the current school year closed Jan. 9. Fulton County Schools has already published the timeline for 2027-28 admissions: the school's website states that window opens Oct. 1, 2026.
