A former contractor accused of stealing from multiple Fulton County Schools campuses was detained at Cambridge High School in Milton the same day investigators identified him, according to a district statement reported by WSB-TV on Friday, July 31.

The district publicly identified the man as Jason Johnson in its official statement. Johnson has not been formally arrested or charged. He was issued a criminal trespass warning banning him from all Fulton County Schools property.

Fulton County Schools Police said the investigation began after officers received a theft report at one of the district's schools. Using surveillance technology and other investigative tools, they identified Johnson as a person of interest and immediately pushed a "Be on the Lookout" bulletin with his photo to every campus and to local law enforcement agencies.

Milton Police helped locate and detain Johnson at Cambridge High School that same day.

The district described Johnson as the primary suspect in a broader investigation involving alleged property crimes at multiple campuses but did not specify which schools were affected, what was taken, or the dollar value of any losses. The exact date of the detention was not disclosed; the district's statement was released to media on July 31.

District officials said there was never any threat to students or staff.

The timing adds urgency for Milton families: Fulton County Schools opens its 2026-27 school year Monday, Aug. 3, just three days after the incident became public.

Cambridge High School parent Summer Keatley told WSB-TV the news was unsettling but not enough to shake her confidence in the school. "Troubling to hear that somebody could get into the school, but have full trust in Cambridge High School to be monitoring that," Keatley said. "Our kids have always felt very safe going there."

Fulton County Schools Police said the investigation remains active and that they are working closely with law enforcement partners. Because it is an ongoing criminal investigation, the department said it cannot release additional details. Milton Police Department has not issued a separate public statement on the detention.
