Birmingham Falls Elementary posted 87 percent math proficiency on last year's Georgia Milestones, according to The Roundabout's Milton schools guide, which compiled assessment data for all 11 schools serving Milton families. That figure leads every other Milton school as Fulton County Schools prepares to open for the 2026-27 year on Monday, August 3.
The score comes as the district reported systemwide gains on the 2025 Milestones across math, science, and social studies at every grade level. Birmingham Falls already earned state recognition as a 2022-23 Georgia Literacy Leader for having 90 percent or more of its third-graders reading at grade level.
Fulton County Schools Board of Education President Kristin McCabe said in April, when the district was named the state leader in 2025 accountability awards with 39 schools recognized, that the results "reflect the focused work happening in our classrooms every day."
Bell times and calendar
Elementary schools open at 7:40 a.m. and dismiss at 2:20 p.m. Middle schools run 8:55 a.m. to 4:05 p.m. High schools start at 8:20 a.m. and let out at 3:30 p.m.
The board-approved calendar includes a full-week fall break from Monday, September 21, through Friday, September 25. That's an expansion from the usual three days.
Crabapple traffic detours
The Freemanville Road bridge replacement, a $2.9 million GDOT project replacing a 1960-era span over Cooper Sandy Creek, is forcing detours for buses and families heading to four schools: Milton High School, Northwestern Middle School, Crabapple Crossing Elementary, and Birmingham Falls Elementary.
Spillover traffic is expected on Birmingham Highway and Mayfield Road. The Heritage Walk roundabout will be congested between 7 and 9 a.m. and again from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m., according to The Roundabout.
Milton Police will deploy extra officers in the Crabapple area during the first few weeks of school.
The bridge closed May 26. GDOT's last update had the work on schedule for a late-October reopening.
Other road improvements
New left-turn lanes at the Cogburn Road and Webb Road intersection were nearing completion as of Sunday, August 2, timed to ease commutes to Hopewell Middle School and Cogburn Woods Elementary. A new traffic signal at Crabapple Road and Green Road, scheduled to activate Thursday, July 30, was still dark as of Friday, July 31.
What's ahead
A $1.3 billion ESPLOST referendum goes before Fulton County voters on Tuesday, November 3. Milton-area schools listed for capital improvements include Milton High, Northwestern Middle, Birmingham Falls Elementary, Crabapple Crossing Elementary, and Webb Bridge Middle School.
