Atlanta Symphony Orchestra principal clarinetist Jesse McCandless performed for more than 200 Alpharetta Elementary School students on Sept. 14, opening Music Milton's second season of concerts and free education programs.

McCandless brought his A-flat clarinet, crafted from African blackwood, and showed third-, fourth- and fifth-graders how its larger size produces a deeper sound than a standard B-flat instrument, Appen Media first reported. He walked students through scales, pitch, harmony and chord qualities before closing with encouragement to find what they love to do.

"I don't usually perform exclusively for younger audiences, so I was pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastic the kids were," McCandless said. "… The students were attentive, respectful and full of great questions."

McCandless also serves as an artist affiliate with Emory University's Department of Music.

Ron Gilbert, founder and president of Music Milton, said the visit introduced more than 200 students to the sound of the clarinet and the basics of melody and harmony. Gilbert called it "a great way for Music Milton to kick off its second season."

Music Milton is a Milton-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit launched in May 2025. The organization offers free educational programming in Milton, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell and Cumming. Its 2026–27 season includes five concerts spanning classical, jazz and bluegrass, plus a free Family Concert.

Matt Koperniak, coordinator of performing arts at Fulton County Schools, said hearing McCandless perform and share his musical journey gave students inspiration and perspective that extends beyond the classroom. Fulton County Schools also highlighted the Sept. 14 program on X, describing it as an engaging experience connecting learning and the joy of music.
