Alpharetta is recruiting volunteers to pull litter from streams, greenways and roadways during the city's annual Rivers Alive cleanup on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Rock Mill Park, a 20-acre site along the Big Creek Greenway at 3100 Kimball Bridge Road. The City of Alpharetta and the Alpharetta Natural Resources Commission are organizing the effort. The cleanup is part of a statewide Rivers Alive program that draws thousands of volunteers across Georgia each year, according to the city's event announcement.
Volunteers will sign in at 8:30 a.m., hear brief announcements at 8:45 a.m. and then head out to assigned project sites. Tasks include removing litter and debris from waterways, stenciling storm drains and other cleanup projects. Crews return to Rock Mill Park by 11:30 a.m. to weigh and tally what they collected.
All skill levels are welcome. The city said the event is open to families, scout troops, service groups and individuals.
Terry Porter, staff contact for the Natural Resources Commission, is handling pre-registration. Volunteers can sign up by emailing [email protected] or calling (678) 297-6213. Organizers ask volunteers to register in advance for project assignments.
Milton is hosting its own Rivers Alive cleanup the following day, Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Providence Park, 13440 Providence Park Drive, Appen Media reported. That event focuses on removing debris from the lake's shoreline and stream buffers at the 42-acre park.
