The Kroger at 11877 Douglas Road in Alpharetta closed Aug. 16, 2025, one of roughly 60 stores nationwide the grocery chain has been shutting down as part of a closure plan it announced in 2025.
Kroger described the affected stores as locations not producing sustainable results, USA Today reported in a compilation of the closures. Three other Georgia Kroger stores closed in the same round: an Atlanta location at 2452 Morosgo Way NE on July 19, 2025; a Decatur location at 3479 Memorial Drive on Sept. 13, 2025; and a Brookhaven location at 3855 Buford Highway NE on Oct. 18, 2025, according to AS USA's compiled list.
Workers offered transfers
Kroger said in its first-quarter 2025 earnings news release that it would offer roles at other stores to all employees at affected locations. The company operates more than 2,700 stores nationwide. The number of workers who had been at the Douglas Road store was not made public.
A Kroger at 10945 State Bridge Road near the Johns Creek-Alpharetta border does not appear on any published closure list.
Why Kroger cut stores
The closures followed multiple court rulings that blocked Kroger's proposed merger with Albertsons. CEO Greg Foran, a former Walmart U.S. executive who took over in February 2026, has pushed a cost-cutting strategy that includes trimming underperforming locations while investing in stronger ones.
"Our operating costs have been growing faster than our sales," Foran said during Kroger's first-quarter 2026 earnings call in June 2026. "That's not sustainable, and frankly, it's not acceptable."
Moody's Ratings analyst Chedly Louis told Digiday in July 2026 that Kroger is focusing on the in-store experience and doubling down on locations where it believes it can compete.
As of mid-August 2026, Kroger had already closed more than 35 of the planned 60 locations across banners including Kroger, Harris Teeter, Mariano's and Pick 'n Save. The company reported first-quarter 2026 sales of $46.12 billion, up from $45.11 billion a year earlier, according to Retail TouchPoints.
What shoppers had nearby
Alpharetta-area residents who shopped at the Douglas Road store have several nearby grocery options, including Publix locations on McGinnis Ferry Road and Birmingham Road, Whole Foods Market at Avalon, Trader Joe's, The Fresh Market on Old Alabama Road, Sprouts Farmers Market and ALDI on Highway 9 North.
No information about a replacement tenant or redevelopment plans for the Douglas Road space has surfaced in public records. Kroger declined to provide additional details beyond its initial announcement, USA Today reported.
