Alpharetta's City Council wrapped its Monday, Aug. 3 meeting in under 19 minutes, unanimously approving more than $1 million in spending on road resurfacing and a gym HVAC replacement while pointing residents toward the bigger event on the horizon: the Planning Commission's Thursday, Aug. 6 hearing on the North Point Sports & Entertainment District.
All council members were present except Councilman Brady.
Road resurfacing grant
The council voted unanimously to submit a fiscal year 2027 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant application to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The grant totals $821,823, with a required 30% city match of $246,542. The money pays for milling and resurfacing city roads.
Wills Park HVAC
Council members also unanimously approved up to $150,133.85 to contractor A-Comfort for replacement of a 50-ton HVAC unit at the Wills Park Recreation Center gym. The project carries a 10-week lead time for the unit and a one-week installation window requiring a crane. The next-closest bid came in at $167,765.
Fire prevention ordinance
A second-reading text amendment to Chapter 20 of the city code, the fire prevention and protection ordinance, passed unanimously with no changes from the first reading. Fire Chief Brad Dener presented the item.
New Design Review Board member
Councilwoman Katie Reeves appointed Martine Zinskus to the Design Review Board. Reeves described Zinskus as a longtime Windward-area resident who previously served on the Planning Commission.
"This is an important time in our city and we need clear heads like Martine," Reeves said.
Mayor Jim Gilvin swore Zinskus in at the meeting, noting the city relies on hundreds of volunteers like her to complement its nearly 500 employees.
Sculpture exhibit approved
The consent agenda included approval of a contract with Arts Alpharetta for "Dazzle and Discord," a 10-sculpture outdoor exhibit to be installed across the city from August through September. Pieces include "Vortex Vortex," a solar-powered rotating sculpture, and works headed to Union Hill Park, Wills Park and Brooke Street Park, Appen Media reported.
North Point timeline
The North Point rezoning was not on the Aug. 3 agenda. But a council member reminded attendees that the Planning Commission hearing on Jamestown LP's proposal to redevelop the 100-acre North Point Mall site is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6, and urged residents to review the full document packet online.
The council member said the rezoning application is expected to come before the full City Council approximately two weeks after the Planning Commission hearing. As we reported Aug. 4, the city posted a public explainer clarifying that the associated Tax Allocation District does not create a new tax or raise existing rates.
The council entered executive session on one litigation matter before adjourning.
What's next
Councilmen Hypes and Driskell announced a town hall meeting for Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Preston Ridge Community Center, adjacent to the YMCA. Deputy Chief Scott Meckler and Fire Chief Brad Dener will attend, with public safety as the initial focus. The next regular council meeting is Monday, Aug. 17.
